Abortion - A realistic approach

The problem of making abortion illegal

I understand the desire and rationality behind being 'pro-life', However, I also realize that it is impossible to take away a person's ability to make choices. Yes, it is possible for society to deem a specific act to be 'wrong', but an individual can always make the choice to do that act. In the same way that a murderer can make the socially and morally inappropriate decision to kill another person, if abortion were made illegal, it would still be completely possible for a person to get one. Making it illegal would stop some people from getting the procedure done, but not all of them. If someone really wanted to to hide the fact that they were pregnant, they could still get the abortion preformed. And they wouldn't get the procedure done in a clean and sterile clinic, no, they would end up having them preformed in back alleyways, basements, bathrooms, or other diseased, unsterilized, dirty places. Moreover, instead of the procedure being done by a qualified, trained, and accountable professional, the abortion would be preformed by an unaccountable, unprofessional, lowlife that was looking to make a few bucks. Worse yet would be the people that attempted to do the abortion themselves.fetus

All of these non-professional abortions have the obvious risks of damaging the mother's uterus and causing infection. These methods are also much more inhumane to the unborn child than the abortions that are done at clinics now. Non-professional abortions are done with botanical abortifacients, sharpened tools, and abdominal pressure.... It's pretty disgusting.

The solution

This is my solution. I believe that abortions should not be made illegal. However, I think most of us can agree that the moral thing to do is to not kill the child. Because of this, I feel as though abortions clinics should be required to educate women about adoption, give them the resources required to get an adoption instead of having an abortion, and try to persuade women to not abort the pregnancy. If after all of this, the woman still is still determined to abort the child, the clinic should go ahead and do the procedure. Otherwise the woman will go somewhere else to have it done, or attempt it themselves.

Final thoughts

There may be other specifics in a law that had the basis above, such as no abortions after 4 or 5 months, or special procedures for a woman that was pregnant as a result of rape, or legal penalties against a person that has had several abortions (using abortion as a form of birth control, ugh...). But the overall message is pretty clear. Keep abortions legal for women that would pretty obviously find a way no matter what to do it. To not endorse it, but permit it. I feel that this is the best and most realistic solution to the problem.

Please don't mistake the purpose behind this article. I am not pro-abortion. I believe that adoption is a much much better alternative to abortion. However, I am a very logical person and i see the consequences of being 'pro-life'. I do think that the 'pro-life' basis is a good one, we shouldn't be killing unborn children. I also understand the beliefs behind being 'pro-choice' and as a democratic society we should not take away a choice that affects a persons quality of life. Due to the reasons I listed earlier about the negative aspects of anti-abortion laws, I take the stance that the best solution to the abortion issue is a merger between the two groups of thought. This is for the safety of women and for the humanity of the unborn children.

"All of these non-professional abortions have the obvious risks of damaging the mother's uterus and causing infection."

Not mention often causing death to the mother.

Most abortion clinics do offer information and literature about adoption; everyone, from the doctor confirming that a woman is pregnant, to the desk clerk who sets the appointment for the abortion, down to the nurse administering the medication prepping for the procedure advises women and girls about adoption and the benefits of such.

That is true, I was suggesting that the clinics do a bit more, such as literally put the papers for an adoption right in front of the mother, and make absolutely sure that they would rather have an abortion instead of giving it up for adoption

I agree with what you are saying. I don't agree with abortion, but the only logical step is to keep it legal. They should have some more strict laws though in how they go about this though, because I truly believe that the baby, although in a woman's body is completely a separate being. Just because the child is not outside the body, living on it's own does not change this. I mean no one that I know considers themselves a part of their mother's body.
Also, I really don't think many of these women really consider how harmful this procedure can be for their body and the magnitude of this decision.
Back to your article, my opinions on this subject are summarized well in your final thoughts section. Well done.
